Amazing Kitchen Hacks to Make Your Life Easier

You may be a Masterchef or you are a total novice and you totally suck in the kitchen just like me. Whether you are making dinner for the whole family or just happened to have a kitchen in your home (God knows how the kitchen came with the house), you might want to look at these smart hacks to make your life behind the apron a tad bit easier.

Storage

Store tomatoes stem end facing down at room temperature (not in the refrigerator) to make them last longer. This prevents them from absorbing air and moisture

Cover the ends of a bunch of bananas with a plastic wrap. This prevents the release of ethylene gases which results in ripening

To store curry leaves, separate the leaves from the stems and store the leaves in a closed container and refrigerate it. This prevents the leaves from wilting out too soon

To keep brown sugar soft and granular without being hard place a piece of orange peel into the airtight container along with the sugar

Freeze shelled nuts to preserve the natural oils in them and make them last longer

Keep Potatoes from browning

You have observed potatoes turning brown within minutes of peeling and chopping. This is because they oxidise in the presence of oxygen. Keep the potatoes completely immersed in water to prevent this and take them out in time to cook

Keep Apple from browning

Squeeze lemon juice over apple slices to keep it from browning. The citric acid and vitamin C in lemon prevent the oxidation of apple. You may also use diluted honey (one part honey to two part of water) for the same

Quick Fix

Hardened Brown sugar

Microwave the jar of brown sugar next to a small glass of water. The hot steam in the microwave will loosen the block of hardened brown sugar

Crystallized honey

De-crystallize honey by placing the jar in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes

Too much salt

This happens quite a lot in every kitchen. If the salt in your soup, curry or stew is too much just toss a potato into it and boil. The potato will take up the extra salt. Once you are done, fish it out or let in stay for a thicker soup

Peeling Citrus Fruits

Roll the fruit on a plane surface or microwave them a minute for easy peeling

Peeling Garlic

Remove the cloves from the bulb and gently whack them with a chef’s knife. The clove will pop right out of the skin

Peeling Potatoes

Draw a line along a circumference of the potato with a knife, cutting only the skin. Boil the potato and then give it a cold water bath. Now you can easily separate the skin from the potato

Peeling hardboiled eggs

Peel multiple hardboiled eggs by shaking them together in a closed jar with water. Better yet add vinegar into the water while boiling eggs. The vinegar will loosen the egg whites from the shell. Baking soda also does the same job. There is another, more ‘funner’ way to peel hardboiled eggs. Watch the movie Ramona and Beezus to know how

Squeezing lemon

To get the most from lemons, refrigerate them, then microwave and finally roll them on a surface and then squeeze them

Slicing onion

You can slice your onions without welling up your eyes. No, I don’t mean wearing a swimming goggles or helmet or having someone else do it for you. Tempting, right? I know. Just hold a slice of bread in your mouth while you skin, slice or chop onions. The sulfur gas released by the onion will get absorbed onto the bread thereby preventing the gases from reaching your eyes
